在北宋时，杨五郎因为愤恨奸臣潘洪对他杨家的迫害，便来到五台山削发出家。有一天，酒醉回山，听到寺中有马叫声，师父告诉他说：“京城有位军爷来庙中借宿。”杨五郎就怀疑是奸臣派来的人，带醉到客堂去盘问这 个借宿的人。借宿的人原是杨六郎，他到昊天塔搬取父亲的骨灰，经过五台山。六郎见到一个和尚卤莽地撞进来，也产生了怀疑，俩人互相盘问，最后才明白原来是分别了多年的亲兄弟。
