『野ばらのジュリー』『巴里のイザベル』に続いて放送された「キリン名曲ロマン劇場」の第3作で、本作は“アメリカ民謡の父”とされる大作曲家フォスターの曲をテーマとした。南北戦争当時を背景に、大農園の娘ジェニーが孤児たちと力を合わせて生きていく様を描く。アメリカ南部にあるバージニア州の大農場園。このリード家の美しき金髪を持つ末っ子ジェニーが15歳に成長するのと前後し、南北戦争が始まった。だがそんな中でも父ジェームスは南北両陣営と取引して利潤を得ようと奔走。これを許せなかったジェニーは戦地へ向かい、亡き母が密かにやっていた孤児救済を引き継ぎつつ、北軍兵士の救護に励むのだった。本作の製作はダックスインターナショナルが担当。同社は元日活の映画監督である丹野雄二が興した製作会社だった。
