A poet and singer, Baal is invited by a financier to have his work launched internationally. The artist, however, refuses the invitation to ascend socially with sarcasm and good humor. Instead he chooses to live as an outsider, an anarchic performer, a loafer who would rather indulge in freedom and make fun of the commitments of a social life he does not believe in.
